Hello. I'm Dr. David Jayne, and I'd like to open this third video of the series discussing some of the methods that I help you use to gain control of your weight situation and your carbohydrate addiction.
So the one that I favor the most is a combination of phentermine, which is an appetite suppressant, which has been on the market for 30 plus years. It is generally very safe, few side effects, can cause a little bit of insomnia, can give you a jittery feeling or palpitations if you take too much at any one time, but really does a good job at helping alleviate some of your hunger pangs and some of your cravings early on in the process as you're learning to count the carbs and as you're learning to incorporate more fat into your diet.
So, in the beginning of the process, I consider it to be a blessing for you because it makes things easier. At the end, it makes things harder because most people, after a period of time of putting their time and effort in and gaining control of the situation, will be afraid to stop the phentermine because they're going to be convinced that it was a big portion of the reason why they've gotten control of the situation, which really comes down to eating the fat and counting your carbs. But I'm not opposed to using phentermine.
In selected cases, we do a screening with an EKG. I talk to you about cardiac histories and we do the screening part to make sure that you're a good fit for using phentermine. But I do use it in quite a few patients, and I do think it dovetails very nicely with low carbohydrate, high fat diet. But you could do the low carb, high fat without any medication.
The second one is I hear a lot of people say, "Well, what's the difference between keto diet or ketosis, and low carb?" Well, with ketosis, if you eat more than 20 or 30 grams of carbohydrate a day, which is a very small amount, it's very difficult to stay there. I don't think it's realistic for most people to be in ketosis. I believe that the better choice is to find some reasonable level of carbohydrate intake where you can maintain the way you want to look and maintain a decent percentage body fat. So I'm much more in favor of a low carbohydrate diet versus a ketosis diet.
Lastly, I'd like to speak for a minute about the HCG diet. So with HCG diet, you eat 500 calories a day. It's an extremely regimented, very restrictive diet. You do it for about six weeks. You can lose tremendous amounts of weight. You do either injections or drops of HCG under your tongue that helps control your appetite during the process and helps you tolerate the 500 calories a day.
I don't like it as well as I do the other option because you're not changing the way you're going to eat for the rest of your life. You're going to have to change again in six weeks because in six weeks' time, you'll have to come in and reincorporate more fat into the diet. I think you might gain something temporarily in the very short term. But I think the better route to take is if you're going to do something, use the phentermine with the low carb and try to start eating the way you're going to eat for the rest of your life.
