What Makes BOTOX Cosmetic Unique?
The active ingredient in Allergan pharmaceutical company's product is a neurotoxic protein called botulinum toxin. There are variations on the botulinum toxin used for aesthetic and medical applications, such as Dysport® and Xeomin®, but there is only one BOTOX Cosmetic.
The specific protein used by Allergan is onabotulinumtoxinA. Competitors such as Dysport may be similar, but only the onabotulinumtoxinA protein produced and sold by this manufacturer can be sold as BOTOX injections.
How BOTOX Injections Work
Botulinum toxin has been used for more than 20 years to treat a variety of conditions. Injections of botulinum toxin for the treatment of cosmetic concerns on the face, such as wrinkles and lines, are the most frequently performed cosmetic procedure in the United States.
Botulinum toxin is a potent neurotoxin, that when injected, blocks nerve signals to a specific area and stops the muscles from moving. Because the muscles are no longer able to contract, the wrinkles and other signs of aging become softened.
Injections of botulinum toxin, particularly in the forehead and upper parts of the face, offer predictable results and few adverse side effects. Most patients with cosmetic facial concerns who receive BOTOX treatment report a high rate of satisfaction with the results.
What to Expect during Treatment
Receiving BOTOX Cosmetic injections in Oklahoma City is a fast and simple procedure that begins with a one-on-one meeting with Dr. Jayne. Certain medical concerns may preclude you from BOTOX treatment. In such cases, Dr. Jayne can recommend an alternative non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment, such as laser therapy.
In order to determine if you are a good candidate for BOTOX Cosmetic treatment, Dr. Jayne will begin by asking you a number of questions. Most patients looking to eliminate facial wrinkles and lines on the forehead will qualify, but it is an important step to minimize any potentially serious side effects such as an allergic reaction.
During your consultation, Dr. Jayne will ask you to explain your areas of concern. To help him plan your treatment, he will ask you to contract your facial muscles by frowning, smiling, and performing other movements. He will then explain what BOTOX Cosmetic can do to help you reach your cosmetic goals.
BOTOX Cosmetic treatments can be completed in about 10 minutes. A very small needle is used to administer the injections, and most patients report feeling little to no discomfort during the procedure. However, Dr. Jayne can provide a cooling cream or numbing agent if you are anxious. He will then carefully apply BOTOX Cosmetic to the pre-determined injection sites.
Most patients are able to return to work and other everyday activities immediately after receiving BOTOX Cosmetic injections. Complications and side effects such as drooping eyelids are uncommon. If they do occur, they are usually mild and should clear up within a few days. To reduce the risk of complications and negative side effects after treatment, do not rub or apply pressure to the injection sites for the first 24 hours.
It may take a few days for you to notice an improvement in your wrinkles or frown lines following BOTOX treatment. The results will continue to improve over the course of the next two weeks. The full effects typically last for approximately three to six months before a touch-up becomes necessary.
